From the Sinhalese name “Turamali,” which is thought to mean “stone with mixed colours.”

Some tourmaline crystals grade in colour from one end to the next, in others the colour grades from the outer surfaces inward. When these crystals present a colour grading from green outside to pink inside, they are referred to as “watermelon tourmaline.” Most crystals display at least some grading and therefore it is a popular practise to cut these stones in long shapes in order to display this characteristic.

The colour of tourmaline can be improved by heat treatment although gamma-irradiation treatments may fade over time.

Please note: We take great care to ensure that the photographs are an accurate representation of the actual stone, but due to differences in screen quality and resolution, and the fact that the colour of a gemstone is dependent on the type of light it is viewed in, some variation is possible.
