Chrysoberyl is the mineral species which includes the more well known variety, Alexandrite, though the stone necessarily has to exhibit a colour change from green to red in order to be classified as Alexandrite, red and green being the imperial colours of its name sake, Czar Alexander II, on whose birthday it was discovered in 1830. Any other colour combinations should be referred to simply as “colour change chrysoberyl.”

When the mineral exhibits the phenomenon Chatoyancy (“chat” being French for “cat”), it produces an effect reminiscent of the pupil of a cat’s eye in the form of a moving ray of light when seen in cabochon stones. Natural Alexandrite, and in particular, Cat’s Eye Alexandrite, is one of the rarest gemstones in existence, and also one of the most expensive, outpricing diamonds of similar weight by leaps and bounds. Chrysoberyl, and by extension Alexandrite, can be successfully reproduced in the lab, so care must be taken to avoid synthetic specimens.

Please note: We take great care to ensure that the photographs are an accurate representation of the actual stone, but due to differences in screen quality and resolution, and the fact that the colour of a gemstone is dependent on the type of light it is viewed in, some variation is possible.
