The opal species is divided into three subgroups: precious opal, fire opal and common opal. There is a considerable variation in physical properties between these groups.

Named for its fire-red to orange colour, Fire Opal is often milky and turbid, and very clear and transparent specimens are extremely rare. Fire Opal is the only variant of opal suitable for faceting, but it is extremely sensitive to stresses. Although Fire Opal does not typically show a play of colour, specimens with this phenomenon do occur.

Please note: We take great care to ensure that the photographs are an accurate representation of the actual stone, but due to differences in screen quality and resolution, and the fact that the colour of a gemstone is dependent on the type of light it is viewed in, some variation is possible.
